Hannah Farquhar 2012

As i begin developing my own work, i have resumed my conquest in Fashion and the Art of Fashion. One of the crucial elements in Fashion is Location, similarly to buying houses. The Beauty is in front of you, but you fall in love with it completely when the surroundings fit just right.

This location was a derelict Servents quarter, with the original stone fire place, staircase, and furniture. There was so much character to this place, the models were the finishing touch. I wanted the shots to represent the vanity of todays slaves to fashion. Although i, myself am an avid follower and lover of the fashion, i do not doubt that it has brainwashed us into conforming with the ignorance of the slave makers of our clothes and the testing of our cosmetics, so these shots were to represent the collapse of the world around us not even slightly affecting who we present ourselves to others. Vanity is a first, the world may well now be a second?

Hi Readers,

I am in desperate need of new material to use in my portfolio. If anyone in the area of Blackpool, Thornton, Poulton, Fleetwood etc want to be a volluntary model (can contribute to your own portfolio if you are a model) please contact me on the email link on my ‘About me’ Page. All my worn is modest and tasteful, i have many ideas, and some work would be location, some in the studio.

Kind Regards, Hannah…

p.s please keep supporting me!

31/12/11-New Year, and all its possibilities.

Hannah Farquhar 2011WWell the year is finally at an end. It hasn’t been perfect, but it hasn’t been uneventful. I have learnt so much, having only been at University for 4 months now, and working at the Studio for a year and a half, i some how feel like i’ve reached the climax in my journey, its not going to get any easier. I am no longer a child and yet i still feel as if someone is mapping out my future for me.

I have realised that Portraiture is the most likely career path for me in Photography. I am a social person and i find that i have much more to contribute in the world of Fashion and Commercial Portraiture as well as in the ‘average’ studio. I have recently converted all my resources to Nikon from Canon through a lot of planning and weighing up the ‘pros and cons’ of each make. I find Nikon to in general be much faster and more suited to the professional pace of a Photographer. But that is just my opinion.

On another note, the photo above is my latest feature photo, and a new embarkment i took into Fashion-styled photography. I had a breakthrough when doing this shoot as i was not only communicating with the Model but with the Animal, which in many obvious ways made the shoot more challenging, and more rewarding.

There was just a few brief notes, before i head out to celebrate the New Year!

This Photo was part of a shoot for for testing of the phrase ‘Shot In The Arm’. Not the most enticing of phrases to start a 2 week project on, but i am giving it a go. I thought about the meaning of the phrase and how it could be intterperated to others. Celebrities for example influence and encourage us. The amount of adolescent musicians and amateur bands that crop up all over the country is ever growing! Who can blame them when the sight of your favourite singer or band, live, lights blazing, crowd raving…all right in front of you! So this led me to think of how our own idols and ‘heroes’ in affect can in fact be our very own ‘Shot in the arm’. They give us that boost and confidence, if they can do it so can we? I staged this scenario and composition under the inspiration of various photographers such as Julie Kim and Hannah Dornford-May. I wanted low lighting, tight crops and serious lyrics shown through the image.

This has been a long term interest of mine, in my very early days of about 6 years old, playing with worms and the like. When i was only 15 i took what was to me, one of the most beautiful photos ever taken. However, the years have taught me of its many faults. Never the less the photo of the Catterpillar on the shoe still remains a great favourite of mine. Very recently i took a trip to Yorkshire sculpture park and began hunting out all sorts of deadly prey, and ladybirds ofcourse, and so my love for wildlife photography has been re-opened!

I persued my subject until it took flight, i captured a moment in time, that after all is what photography is about. It was one of those truely magnificent sights in which you stand back and admire the world around you.Now i have the memory that is mine and mine alone to keep forever.

Langfords Guide to Photography 13/08/11

During the summer i have been doing numerous lists of things including trying to pass my driving test, restoring old photographs from my childhood, and reading up on my Photography ready for the start of my degree. One of the books recomended to me was the ‘Langfords Guide to photography’. I have yet to finish this book, but the opening pages alone open up your mind to a more in-depth and meaningful view of photography. The book teaches various techniques and basics on both film and digital photography, and rightly points out why there is such a preference for black and white photography in todays society. I am guessing that this book is one widely used in education and teaching literature, but that isn’t in any way discrediting its ability to clearly teach and put forward new ways of viewing the art. Sadly its not the guide of ‘fold-away’ book you can slip in your handbag, but i have been having a cheeky read during my lunch break, just for fun!

Sorry for the lack of new posts. Currently undergoing some major changes at The Astbury Studio, and University begins in September. Made a major decision to switch from Canon to Nikon :o I have come to the conclusion that is unwise to try to be different and avoid conforming with technology, in fact i think it wise to conform, as you find that it opens up doors to more and more useful resources and new equipment. For example with the first video cameras and the types of film they had. VHS wasn’t neccesarily the best quality, but it was the highest in demand and therefore made alternatives scarce.
